How To Clean Jewelry at Home – Safely
There are many ways to clean jewelry. You can use a small inexpensive jewelry cleaning machine called an Ultrasonic cleaner, where you just drop your jewelry piece for a few minutes and it will loosen all dirt and leave it shiny. Or you can clean it by hand as explained below. Learn how to clean jewelry at home safely, with this simple jewelry cleaning method.
Best Homemade Jewelry Cleaner
Jewelry Cleaner Ingredients
- Dish Detergent
- Warm Water
The best homemade jewelry cleaning solution is a mixture of a few drops of Dawn dish detergent in warm water. Sounds too simple, but it works and it’s safe for most types of jewelry.
Jewelry Cleaning Directions
- Soak the piece of jewelry in the cleaning solution that you made, for a few minutes. If it’s very dirty, then let it sit a few minutes longer to loosen the dirt.
- Scrub the jewelry gently with a soft toothbrush.
- Rinse by placing the jewelry item in a new container of lukewarm water. Caution: Do not hold the item under the tap do that it might not slip from your hand and go down the drain.
Make sure the water isn’t too hot or too cold, as some gemstones do not take well to drastic changes in temperature. You can dry the piece off with a paper towel or a regular cloth, as long as you’re careful not to snag the prongs on the fibers.
Things to avoid when cleaning jewelry at home
Avoid the following materials: Vinegar is slightly acidic and won’t agree with soft or porous stones or plated jewelry. Baking soda is also slightly abrasive, which could scratch softer stones and metals.
